Saudi Arabia announced an agreement to create an entity of countries along the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

They stated that the entity will enhance security, investment and development for countries by the Red Sea.

The Red Sea entity is an initiative by King Salman in order to achieve stability in the region. The entity will include Egypt, Sudan, Djibouti, Yemen Somalia and Jordan.

Representatives from Egypt, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Jordan gathered in Riyadh on Wednesday to discuss the initiative.

"This is part of the kingdom's efforts to protect its interests and those of its neighbors and ... to stabilize the region that we live in and to try to create synergies between the various countries..." Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told reporters after a day of closed-door meetings.

"The more cooperation and coordination that you have among the countries of this region, the less negative outside influence will be on this region," he said.

SOUTH PORTLAND — An experienced social worker soundly defeated a longtime local business owner in Tuesday’s citywide special election for the District 5 City Council seat.
Deqa Dhalac, intercultural program manager at the Center for Grieving Children in Portland, beat Donald “Cookie” Cook, owner of Rolando’s Redemption on outer Main Street, 1,418 to 700.

Dhalac, 52, is believed to be the first African-American and the first Muslim to be elected to the council, said Kathy DiPhilippo, a city historian.

“This is absolutely wonderful,” Dhalac said after hearing the results Tuesday night. “I am so proud and humbled that the voters of South Portland have placed their trust in me. It’s a privilege and a responsibility, and I’m ready to go to work for them.”

A single mother of three, Dhalac said her campaign was a labor of love and she would have been proud of her effort even if she had lost. But she admitted to a particular sense...

Anjero Suqaar is the Somali take on the Ethiopian favourite Injera, and is served with a stew made from small cubes of beef and vegetables.

If you want something closer to the searingly spicy Ethiopian original, you can can order Anjero Habesha (Ethiopian injera), which comes with a red paprika and chilli sauce, a green chilli sauce, spinach, bits of boiled meat, lentil sauce, a chicken leg and a hard-boiled egg.

The restaurant, in Persborg, lies just outside the city centre. It was founded in 2014 by Jawahir Shanle, who started out running a food stall at the Malmö Festival, and then went through a three-year struggle to turn it into a restaurant.

She has since sold the restaurant on to the Somali businessman Rahma Jeele Mohamed, who renamed it after the...

Somalia’s Parliament Not Fit for Purpose: Impeachment Process

At the outset I must make clear I am not a beneficiary or have any relationship with the current Somali Administration and by analyzing my previous pieces on Somalia’s politics, one would find I do not hold back with my critical views once I notice the government has made mistakes.

I am conscientious Somali/British citizen who takes a long term view of politics and the challenges our country faces today.

Considering the deep seated and compelling challenges faced by our country in the area of security, poverty, institutional governance and infrastructure, you would think the last thing that should be in our Member of Parliament’s minds is an impeachment process involving the presidency. The lack/absence of urgency and sincere conviction from some our parliamentarians are bordering negligence and out-right political incompetency. As Somalia is at cross-roads, facing three dimensional challenges that include terrorism, poverty and institutional...

Reuters) - Somalia's economic growth is expected to pick up in 2018 as it recovers from drought that had reduced farming output, the International Monetary Fund said on Tuesday.

It said it projected gross domestic product at 3.1 percent this year from 2.3 percent in 2017. Somalia exports bananas and also produces sorghum.

"Economic activity in 2018 is recovering from the 2016–17 drought. A favourable rainy season is supporting the economic recovery, particularly in the agricultural and livestock sectors; this is leading to a decline in food prices," the fund said in a statement.
